"I am not a slave to a God I don't believe in"
I saw this boldly emblazoned on the rear window of a van. I take it to mean, "I am not a slave to God, because I actually do not believe in him."
But it raised a question about double negatives. Does the phrase work as a double negative? so could it be saying, "I am a slave to God because I believe in him"?

Well...if you're not a slave to a God you don't believe in, doesn't that imply that you are a slave to a God you do believe in?

The great thing about linking those two words, now that I think of it, is in Paul's letters, the introductions which are usually translated "Paul, Servant of Jesus Christ," are more accurately "Paul, slave of Jesus Christ. "Doulos" really is slave not servant.
OTOH, we encounter again the idea that God is antithetical to the human freedom he created.
These van owners I think are very intelligent people who are looking to spark deep religious discourse everywhere. Fascinating.
Next time you see them maybe you should flag them down and engage them....
I think the double negative serves as a pretty decent counter to those who would prefer an All-Christian-All-The-Time government.
It's not as much a statement about their religious/spiritual beliefs as it is about the political climate in America.
Even as a Christian, I'm not a slave to a god I don't believe in either - and the god I'm not a slave to is the fundie-Christian-god many of the conservative (both politically and religiously) types think is America's personal god.
I have trouble with the word "slave", anyway. The whole point is the freedom to choose God/god. If it's about slavery, what's the point?
Mmmm..... This would be the full sentance with the correct grammer if it where to be writen in full, I guess.

So I am not a slave to TV, pop music, even Film Stars, but I am a slave to Yahwah.
Though a double negative is very confusing, My favourite one is Kids saying NO I am NOT doing it, so I say you are doing it then? They always look confused.

I can't believe this. I set out to get some ideas on my new site.. you know themes, color, layout, etc.... and I can't believe how much stuff I've found looking around.
