Pope Grotto Ready and Cardinals Sign Petition for Fast Track Sainthood

The tomb of the late Pope John Paul II is due to go on public display in the grottoes beneath St Peter's Basilica in the Vatican.
Roman Catholic cardinals have viewed the tomb, which is covered with a white marble slab inscribed with the Pope's name and the dates of his papacy.

They are calling for procedures to make the late pontiff a saint to be accelerated, the Italian media reports.

I suppose I am one of the few who thinks fast-tracking the Pope's canonization in this fashion is an extremely bad idea. I should note that I am not a believer per se in the saint thing in that saints is what we all are. But putting my personal belief aside, I think it would create all sorts of problems, precedent-wise, to canonize this pope in one fell swoop.

I honestly don't see the harm in giving this five to ten years. I understand and appreciate the suggestion that this is the sensus fidelium at work and this plan hearkens back to much earlier days in Christianity when sainthood was by accalamation. I think the integrity of the process is at stake and that a straight up canonization undermines a process that's in place for a reason.

But if the people want cake, by all means, just don't get crumbs on me.
