It is apparent that Mary Jo Anderson doesn't think much about collegiality. But unfortunately, for her, anyway, this is not a modern invention.

No system works if it does not have a balance between opposing forces, in the Catholic case, conservatives and liberals. One thing, however, that conservatives need to realize is that the spectrum of orthodoxy is quite broad, so much so that you can have legitimate liberal orthodox Catholics just as you can have conservative orthodox Catholics. The liberals can be credited with moving the Church forward and can boast of such members as Thomas Aquinas and John Henry Newman, who eventually become conservative fixtures. You may even list Blessed John Duns Scotus, whose life was threatened in France because he suggested the radcal notion that Mary was immaculately conceived.

No one is saying that conservatives and liberals shouldn't fight it out, I just think it becomes less constructive when words like "dissident" and "dissent" are used. I think it may betray ignorance of the extent of Catholic orthodoxy.
