Atheism on the Rise

Wapo has an article on the rise of Atheism. I don't think it is terribly surprising, Religion hasn't necessarily acquitted itself nobly in modern history. My wife points out that these are regular cycles in human history. That is true. What's more, is that cycles of atheism lead to de-mythologization and intellectual advances which then open the door for a rapprochement between faith and reason. It seems that faith to advance to new levels of self awareness and understanding, previous mythological barriers have to be credibly abandoned.

All in all, it is not a horrible thing in the vast cycle of human history. It is, though, rather unfortunate for the individuals involved to be robbed of the consolation of the divine.

Does that mean we are all going to Hell then? It is little wonder that atheism is on the rise. Most freethinking people in the 21 century just don't believe in bogey men, fairies,Santa clause and
other imaginary beings, including gods.
Our deluded parents in the old days frightened us with hell and no presents at xmas if we weren't good boys and girls. Take away all that scarey stuff and you get a non-believer, or atheist or agnostic.
I just want you all to know that at 73 years of age and a full blown atheist, I have absolutely nothing to worry about and neither do you.

Consolation of the divine?
Now that worries me.

If you have nothing to worry about, then chill out.

As for me and my God, we'll do just fine, thank you.
